S&D condemns disinformation by Turkish media

The Socialists and Democrats Group in the The EU’s directly elected legislative body comprised of 705 members. It is involved in policymaking but it does not have the power to propose new legislation. In a press release, the group says it will raise the issue within Parliament and demand President of the EP, Roberta Metsola, to condemn the disinformation through a letter to the Turkish Grand National Assembly. 

The group focuses particularly on the accusation, by Turkish media, that Swedish S&D A Member of the European Parliament (MEP) is a person who has been elected to serve as a representative in the European Parliament. MEP Evin Incir took part in an armed struggle and is a member of the Kurdish PKK that has been designated as a terrorist organisation by the Turkish government as well as the United States and the European Union.

MEP Nacho Sánchez Amor blames the Turkish anti-terrorism provisions and calls them too broad, too arbitrary and used to repress critical voices in Turkey itself. “Now the same methods and argumentations are being used against European politicians, which can be considered as Turkish interference in European political processes.”

The accusations happened in the context of Turkey’s refusal to allow Finland and Sweden to join NATO in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Turkish government claims the two countries have ties with the PKK.
